1. In today's bellringer we discussed the importance of pronouns matching their antecedents (the noun they refer to) in both number and gender. If the noun is singular, the pronoun should be also. If the noun is plural, the pronoun should be also. Words like team are considered singular. While they are made up many players, there is only one team. We also discussed the difference between subject pronouns (used in the subject of a sentence) and object pronouns (found after the verb in a sentence). See Monday's post for bellringer practice.
2. In our research paragraphs, today we organized our research in our writing notebooks. We brainstormed how all our evidence fits together and looked for how we could categorize or organize our information. Then, we need to pick and choose which categories (big ideas) we want to include in our paragraph. Remember, it is only a paragraph and not a full paper, so we won't be able to use ALL our research. You can have 2-3 big ideas - but be aware how many supporting detail you have. If you have several details for each big idea, it might be better to have only 2 big ideas.
3. Next, we create a plan. We drew a T-chart and decided which information we wanted to include where. We added transition words and highlighted. Remember, there is a cheat sheet of transition words in your pink workbooks.
4. Then, we wrote 4 topic sentences (SDS, NS, S,S, FANBOYS). Choose one to be your topic sentence and one to be your conclusion. Again, there is a cheat sheet in your pink workbook.
5. Finally, we wrote our rough drafts in our notebooks. Start with your topic sentence, use your plan to write a transition and turn your first big idea into a sentence. Then look for ways to combine your supporting details into complex and compound sentences. Move to your next transition and big idea. Repeat until you end with your conclusion sentence. Skip lines. Highlight. Be ready to type and format tomorrow.
