U2L14: Launching Spoken Word Poetry (Fri. 5/18)

Learning Targets:

  • I can describe what Spoken Word poetry is and list criteria of Spoken Word Poetry.

  • I can analyze a model Spoken Word Poem to generate criteria of an effective Spoken Word Poem.

Agenda:

  1. First we met with our Buffalo partners and discussed the answers to the focus question from yesterday's reading.

  2. We discussed the Performance Task for the novel which is to write a Spoken Word Poem about a theme from the novel using two scenes and a symbol.

  3. We read through the Performance Task Prompt together and then looked at a Model Spoken Word Poem to help generate criteria of what we need to accomplish in our own poems.

  4. We were assigned to small groups and each was assigned one of the Key Quotes from Lesson 8. Each group used their anchor chart (posted around the room) to review the events from the novel that demonstrate the quote/theme they were assigned.

  5. Each group put the events in sequential order and added any new events from the last several chapters.

  6. The exit ticket was to identify your assigned quote, the theme it represents, and the symbol it features. Also, from your group's list of events, select the two scenes you are going to include in your Spoken Word poem.
