U2L4: Analyzing Themes (Fri. 5/11)

Learning Target:

• I can analyze how the themes of the Golden Rule and Taking a Stand are developed in Speak.

Agenda:

1. We collected our Structured Notes from pages 141-152.

2. We reread pages 148-142 in Speak and discussed the gist of the section.

3. We met with our Syracuse partners and completed Part A of the themes note-catcher to answer questions about how the section related to the theme of the Golden Rule.

4. We reviewed what it means to take a stand and looked at the Little Rock Nine photo to talk about the differences between taking a positive stand (helping others) and a taking a negative stand (self-interest). Then we completed Part B of the themes note-catcher to answer questions about how the section related to the theme of Taking a Stand.

5. We finished the discussion with an Exit Ticket that was completed individually and collected.

6. Homework: Read pages 152-163 in Speak and complete the structured notes for Monday.

7. Quiz on Monday about comparing/contrasting the film to the text.
