U2L3: Fishbowl Comparing the Two Melindas (Wed. 5/9)

Learning Targets:

  • I can use the strongest evidence from the text in my close reading of a scene in Speak.

  • I can analyze how Melinda's responses reveal aspects of her character.

  • I can analyze the impact word choice has on meaning and tone as Melinda questions herself.

  • I can share my ideas and build on other's ideas during Fishbowl.

Agenda:

  1. We met with our Rochester discussion appointments to and completed two questions about either Melinda One or Melinda Two from the chapter "Stupid Stupid."

  2. Then we started a Fishbowl discussion. The pairs who studied Melinda One sat in the inside circle. They took turns sharing their answers and then having a student-led discussion for five minutes. The pairs who studied Melinda Two sat in an outside circle and took notes.

  3. Then we switched. The Melinda Twos moved to the inside circle to discuss, and the Melinda Ones moved to the outside circle to observe and take notes.

  4. We regrouped with our Rochester partners to discuss the difference between the two Melindas and how this affects our overall understanding of Melinda's character.

  5. Homework: read pages 141-152 in Speak and complete structured notes.
