U2L1: Making Character Inferences (Mon. 5/7)

Learning Targets:

  • I can support my inferences about Speak with the strongest evidence from the text.

  • I can analyze what other characters' treatment of Melinda reveals about her character.

  • I can analyze how Melinda's words and actions reveal her character.

Agenda:

  1. We started class today by playing "I Have, Who Has" with the vocabulary from Speak.

  2. Then, we completed an activity called Three Threes in a Row. In groups of 3-4, we answered three questions in a row about Melinda and how people treat her.

  3. Next, we walked around the room to talk with students from other groups. We asked person to explain one and only one answer. We listened to their explanation and then summarized that answer on our own paper. We recorded the initials of the student who shared their information with us. Then we repeated by moving on to another student for an answer to another question. We talked to six different students in all to find the answers to the other two rows of three questions.

  4. Finally, we debriefed as a whole class to discuss what we were able to infer about Melinda and those around her.

  5. Homework: Read pages 116-126 and complete structured notes for tomorrow.
