U2L8: Four Corners: Symbols & Themes in Speak (Thu. 5/17)

Learning Targets:

  • I can analyze how symbols are developed in Speak.

  • I can analyze how thematic topics are developed in Speak.

Agenda:

  1. We met with our Syracuse partners to review and share the answer to our focus question from yesterday's reading.

  2. We created a Frayer Model for the word Empowerment and looked at examples, definitions, characteristics, and non-examples of the word.

  3. Then we analyze four different quotes from the novel and summarized what theme that quote represents. We also identified what symbols are used in the novel to represent that theme. Quote A = the importance of communication (lips/mouth/throat). Quote B = the damage of isolation (closet). Quote C = the lasting effects of trauma or injury (blood/bleeding). Quote D = growth or gaining strength/empowerment (trees, plants, seeds).

  4. Each of us received a sentence strip with an event from the novel. After analyzing the event, we choose which of the four quotes best represents the event. We placed our events on the corresponding anchor charts around the room and used our groups and the class to justify our choices and change them if needed.

  5. Homework: Read Speak pages 186-198 (end of the book) and complete structured notes for tomorrow.
