1. This week our bellringer practice is on Independent Clauses. Quiz on Friday. (click here for this week's practice)
2. Monday we defined and practiced Allusions on IXL Level J 4.4 & 4.5. Then we read "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman and read the Shmoop line by line summary to help us understand it (link posted on Google Classroom). We did this with Langston Hughe's "I, Too, Sing America." Then we discussed why Hughes might have chosen to write a poem that alludes to another poem. (Click here for Mon-Wed notes)
3. Tuesday we listened/read the fairytale "Cinderella" by the Brothers Grimm. Then we began analyzing the poem "Cinderella" by Anne Sexton. We used the line by line Shmoop summary (link on Google Classroom).
4. Wednesday we finished reading and analyzing Sexton's poem, and answered a RACE question about WHY Sexton and Hughes chose to write a poem that alluded to another poem and what the purpose of the allusion was. We used the contrasting tones and themes to help us determine purpose.
