Learning Targets:

I can identify specific claims that Shirley Chisholm makes in "Equal Rights for Women."

I can evaluate evidence that supports a claim in "Equal Rights for Women."

I can objectively summarize "Equal Rights for Women."

First, we completed a QUIZ-QUIZ-TRADE using self-selected vocabulary words from Chisholm's speech.

Next, we complete a two-part jigsaw activity.

In part one, we met with our Buffalo discussion appointment partners were given a claim that Chisholm makes in her speech. We worked with our partners to reread Chisholm's speech and find 2-3 pieces of evidence that supported that claim.

In part two, we formed groups of three with people who had different claims. We each shared our claim and the evidence we found to support that claim.

Finally, we used a graphic organizer to create a summary of Chisholm's speech. We reread our annotations from Wednesday and wrote a gist statement for the entire speech. We then turned that statement into a topic sentence by adding a Name It and Verb It.

We used our annotations from each section to complete the key details section of the graphic organizer. Finally, we added a conclusion sentence that showed why this speech is important (hint: how is Chisholm "taking a stand"?).
