Learning Targets:

  • I can use the strongest evidence from Speak in my understanding of pages 3-17.

  • I can participate in discussions about the text with a partner, small group, and the whole class.

This lesson launches our study of the novel, Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson.

1. We started with Story Impressions. We read several short quotes from the novel and used them to make predications and wonder what the novel will be about.

2. We read pages 3-7 out loud together and paused for comprehension checks and partner discussion about the narrator, Melinda.

3. We learned how to use the Structured Notes routine that we will use throughout our study of the novel. With each reading assignment, you will write the gist of the section, answer a focus question, and use context clues to determine the meaning of selected vocabulary words.

Homework:

Using the Structured Notes graphic organizer, read pages 7-17.
