L12: Analyzing How Literature Draws on Themes from the Bible and World Religions (Tue. 4/24)

Learning Targets:

  • I can deepen my understanding of key words in Speak by using a vocabulary square.

  • I can support my inferences about Speak with the strongest evidence from the text.

  • I can evaluate the similarities and differences between the novel and the film version of Speak.

  • I can analyze how the author draws on the theme of the Golden Rule.

Agenda:

  1. We started class with learning how to make a vocabulary square in our writing journals. We completed one today as a class to prepare ourselves to complete them on our own in the future.

  2. Next, we completed a Gallery Walk using quotes about the Golden Rule from religions around the world. We analyzed how the quotes were the same, how they were different, and then we found either an example in Speak of how a character either illustrates or violates the Golden Rule.

  3. We then reread the pep rally scene (pages 26-29) "Devils Destroy" and compared it to the film version of the same scene. We analyzed ways the film stayed faithful to the text, how it departed from the text, and then we looked at the director's choices to see if the film kept the main idea or message of the scene.

  4. Homework: Read pages 32-47 of Speak and complete the structured notes (due tomorrow at the beginning of class).
