Learning Targets:

  • I can analyze how the structure of "Alone" helps create meaning.

Agenda:

  1. We started the lesson by reading the poem "Alone" by Edgar Allan Poe. With our New York City discussion partners, we reread the poem for gist. Then we analyzed each stanza looking for what it tells us about the narrator.

  2. Then, we used our analysis to complete a paragraph about how the poem is structured to show how the narrator compares himself to everyone else.

  3. Finally, we looked for comparisons between the narrator of the poem and Melinda, the protagonist from Speak.

  4. For homework, we read pages 68-91 together as a class and complete the structured notes which are due tomorrow.
