Learning Targets:

  • I can compare and contrast the structure of "Can It" in Speak to the poem "Alone."

  • I can analyze how the structures of "Can It" in Speak and the poem "Alone" affect meaning.

  • I can evaluate the similarities and differences between the novel and the film version of Speak.

Agenda:

  1. First we turned to page 88 and completed a Narrative Structure Graphic Organizer for the chapter "Can It."

  2. Then, we worked with our Syracuse discussion partner to complete a comparison chart for the structures and meanings of the "Alone" poem from yesterday and the "Can It" chapter. We looked at how each text could be related to the Golden Rule. Then we looked at the structure for each text, and finally we determined how that structured helped create meaning.

  3. Next, we watched the film version of the "Can It" chapter and looked for ways the film stayed faithful and departed from the text. We also looked at close ups shots, medium shots, and wide shots and how the director's choices affected the meaning of the scene.

  4. Homework: Read pages 91-102 and complete the structured notes. Due at the beginning of class on Thursday (mini-courses tomorrow).
